Wood Kitchen Knife Handle Finish

wood kitchen knife handle finish

In this video we look at the finished product of three different methods in finishing your wooden knife handles. i did not show footage of the process because it was boring. lots of hand. Re: best finish for knife handles? i have to vote for poly tho it makes me and odd man out. thinned with spirits 2parts poly one part spirits applied with a piece of bedsheet, 4-5 thin coats. on raw wood my first coat would be a mix of tung poly and sprits 2-2-1 applied liberally for 15 minutes untill the wood will accept no more.. On a "working knife", the best finish is no finish. i've used walnut for knife handles and a good finish is charge the buffing wheel with paraffin (canning wax from the grocery store) or a block of beeswax. when buffed, the heat will drive the wax into the wood making a pretty efficient protective finish..

As soon as i get a new knife, or other kitchen item, with a wooden handle, i use mineral oil (food grade). i put on as many coats as necessary with a paper towel or soft cloth, until the handle is saturated. maybe 3 or 4 coats. let sit for a while to absorb all of the oil, wipe off any excess and it is finished.. You get some really dried out looking wooden knife handles as the years go by. so this week i felt like i had nothing to lose by giving the homemade wood restore recipe another try on my knives. the recipe is a simple combo of equals parts of mayonnaise, lemon juice, and olive oil ..
